Executive management

The Group operations executive comprises the chief executive officer, the chief operating officer, the chief financial officer and the heads of the QBE insurance divisions. The key objective of this team is to build and control QBE's insurance business and to maximise the opportunities available to the Group in the markets in which we choose to operate.

 

Frank O’Halloran, Chief Executive Officer FCA
Age: 63
Mr O'Halloran was appointed chief executive officer in January 1998.  He joined QBE in 1976 as Group financial controller. He was appointed chief financial officer in 1982, joined the board as director of finance from 1987 to 1994 and was director of operations from 1994 to 1997. Mr O'Halloran is a chartered accountant and has had extensive experience in professional accountancy for 14 years and insurance management for over 32 years.

Neil Drabsch, Chief Financial Officer

FCA, FAICD, FCIS
Age: 60
Mr Drabsch was appointed chief financial officer of QBE Insurance Group in 1994.  He joined QBE in 1991 and was the Group company secretary from 1992 to 2001. Mr Drabsch has 42 years experience in insurance and reinsurance management, finance and accounting, including 24 years as a practising chartered accountant.

Vince McLenaghan, Chief Operating Officer

Age: 50
Mr McLenaghan was appointed chief operating officer of the Group in 2006. Mr McLenaghan has been in the insurance industry for 32 years. During his 26 years with QBE, he has served in a number of general management roles including as managing director of our Australian and Asia-Pacific operations.

Steven Burns, Chief Executive Officer - European Operations

Age: 51
Mr Burns is chief executive officer of QBE’s European operations. He is a chartered accountant and was finance director of the Janson Green managing agency at Lloyd’s from 1987, prior to it being acquired by Limit in 1998. Mr Burns became chief executive officer of the Limit Group in August 2000. In September 2004, he was appointed chief executive officer of European operations as part of the restructure of our European company operations and Lloyd’s division.

John Rumpler, President and Chief Executive Officer - the Americas

Age: 49
Mr Rumpler was appointed president and chief executive officer for QBE, the Americas in April 2009. He joined QBE in 1997 and led the development of QBE's international credit, surety and lenders mortgage insurance business. Mr. Rumpler was formerly a member of the QBE Australia executive team and held board positions on several QBE subsidiaries. Prior to 1992, he worked in banking and structured finance roles with Standard Chartered Bank and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. Mr Rumpler has more than 28 years experience in international banking, government and insurance.

Terry Ibbotson, Chief Executive Officer - Australian Operations

Age: 64
Mr Ibbotson was appointed chief executive officer of QBE’s Australian operations in 2007. He has over 40 years experience in the insurance industry. Mr Ibbotson joined QBE in 1993 and since that time has served in various general management roles, including as chief operating officer of Australian operations.

Mike Goodwin, Chief Executive Officer - Asia-Pacific

BVSc, FIAA, FAICD
Age: 50
Mr Goodwin was appointed chief executive officer of QBE’s Asia-Pacific operations in 2007. He is an actuary and has been in the insurance industry for 17 years, having started his career with Mercantile Mutual. Mr Goodwin was deputy general manager of the QBE Mercantile Mutual joint venture when it was purchased by QBE in 2004 and became chief operating officer of Asia-Pacific operations in 2006.

The Group head office management team works with the Group operations executive to develop and implement policy and standards on matters such as reinsurance,  investments, acquisitions, business planning, human resources strategy, taxation and financial management, and actuarial and risk management.

 

Des Fogarty, President - Equator Re

B.Comm, A.C.I.I.
Age: 48
Mr Fogarty has worked for QBE since 1988, having previously worked for Universal Insurance Company of Ireland Limited since 1983. He was appointed President of Equator Re in January 2005 having held a number of senior management positions within the Group in Ireland and the U.K. He has extensive experience in the reinsurance arena having worked in both claims and underwriting.

Mark ten Hove, Group General Manager - Investments

MBA, Business Economics and Finance, LLM (Masters degree in Law)
Age: 52
Mr ten Hove joined QBE in 1999 as Group Investment Manager, having previously worked as Chief Investment Officer at OCBC Asset Management Limited in Singapore. He has over 23 years experience in funds’ management including with Bankers Trust in Hong Kong and Singapore in 1994 and 1995 and Thornton Investment Management (Dresdner Bank Group) in Hong Kong between 1989 and 1994.

Duncan Ramsay, Group General Counsel and Company Secretary

B Comm, LLB, LLM, FANZIIF, FCIS
Age: 47
Mr Ramsay joined QBE as general counsel in 1993. Since May 2001 he has acted as general counsel and Group company secretary. Prior to joining QBE, Mr Ramsay spent seven years working for Freehills, an Australian law firm, in general commercial and litigation areas.

Jenni Smith, Group General Manager Human Resources

MBA
Age: 47
Ms Smith joined QBE in 2003 and is currently the group general manager, human resources. She was formerly general manager HR, international at Telstra Corporation Ltd., based in Sydney with specific Asia-Pacific responsibilities. Before relocating to Australia in 1999, Ms Smith had extensive business and human resources experience in London in the advertising and television industries.

George Thwaites, Group Chief Risk Officer

B.Eng (Hons) Electronic Engineering, ACA, Institute of Chartered Accountants (England and Wales)
Age: 44
Mr Thwaites joined QBE in 1999 as financial controller for the Asia-Pacific Division, and was appointed to his current role in 2005. Prior to joining QBE, Mr Thwaites worked in finance and accounting roles in insurance and the accounting profession in Australia, the UK and Canada. He has been involved with the insurance industry for more than 15 years.

Blair Nicholls, Group Chief Actuarial Officer

FIAA, FIA (UK), AMP INSEAD, BA Econ
Age: 42
Mr Nicholls was appointed as QBE's chief actuarial officer in 2006 and has worked in the insurance industry for over 20 years. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. Mr Nicholls has been with QBE since 1994 and has undertaken a variety of roles including having spent three years in QBE's London office as the chief actuary for QBE's European Operations and prior to that a number of positions in QBE's Australian operations.
